The authoring team of Rosneft, Arctic Research Centre, and Saint-Petersburg State Marine Technical University was awarded diplomas of the first prize winner of the International competition of scientific, research, technology and innovative solutions aimed at the development and exploration of the Arctic and continental shelf. The contest is supported by the Russian Energy Ministry and the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Development of particularly fragile Arctic region can only be carried out with exceptional responsibility and with the use of the best technical solutions. Since 2011, Rosneft has been systematically developing technologies needed to operate on the Arctic shelf. Ensuring the industrial and environmental safety of hydrocarbon exploration, production and transportation in iceberg-laden waters is one of the research areas. To solve this problem, the Company's experts carried out comprehensive research, which included theoretical insights, physical modeling in a ship model basin, as well as full-scale experimental works on towing icebergs in the Barents and Kara Seas.
The results of Rosneft scientific and technical research devoted to the development of technical means for ensuring iceberg safety of offshore oil and gas production facilities were highly appreciated by the expert inter-departmental commission. The presented work was selected for publication in the collection of the awardees' works.
The international contest of the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation is held annually since 2014. This event is designed to contribute to the creation of sustainable social and economic development of the Arctic and continental shelf, to stimulate scientific, technological and innovation activities, to create conditions for the commissioning of inventions that meet the goals of scientific and technological potential of Russia.
Note for Editors:
The Arctic Research Centre (a part of Rosneft Corporate Research and Development Complex) was established in 2011 to provide scientific proof for implementing offshore projects. The tasks of the Center include the study of weather and ice conditions; the development of criteria for designing marine structures; as well as the creation of technologies for studying environmental parameters, ice, and iceberg drift monitoring, bottom ground surveys.
