RN-Vankor Releases over 250,000 Red-Listed Siberian Sturgeon Fry into Yenisei River

16 October 2020

RN-Vankor, a part of Rosneft Oil Company’s production complex, has released over 250,000 Siberian sturgeon fry into the Yenisei River. The Siberian sturgeon is a valuable, red-listed fish. This amount of sturgeon was released in the Yenisei for the first time. Previously, RN-Vankor had already replenished Siberian reservoirs not only with young sturgeons but also with other valuable species of fish--whitefish and peled.

One of Rosneft’s strategy key priorities in all business areas is ecology and environment. According to the Rosneft-2022 Strategy, the Company is determined to gain the world industry leadership in the safety and environment.

RN-Vankor is implementing a set of measures to introduce advanced conservation technologies that help preserve biological resources and their habitat. Caring for the prosperity of aquatic ecosystems is one of the priorities of the Company’s environmental policy. The large lot of valuable fish released into the natural environment is the contribution of Vankor oilmen to biodiversity conservation in the lower reaches of the Yenisei River.

The young sturgeons grown on request of RN-Vankor by local fish hatcheries were released into the river near the towns of Dudinka and Yeniseisk. According to ichthyologists, this is where fry adaptation is most favourable.

The entire scope of work is carried out in cooperation with the Yenisei branch of Glavrybvod, which is engaged in the artificial reproduction of young aquatic life resources in order to maintain the number of valuable and particularly valuable fish species exposed to human influence and economic activities.

The number of Siberian sturgeon inhabiting only the Yenisei River has fallen sharply in recent years due to anthropogenic impacts, unsustainable fishing and poaching. Recurrent bans on sturgeon fishing had failed to improve the situation, and the species was listed in the Red Book. The addition of young sturgeon to the lower reaches of the Yenisei River will help to preserve the population.
