Rosneft is actively working to increase the level of utilisation of associated petroleum gas (APG) in the Nizhnevartovsk region. Samotlorneftegaz, a production enterprise of Rosneft Oil Company, increased the level of rational use of APG to 98.6% by the end of 2020. The bulk of the produced gas, which was about 6 billion cubic metres, was directed to the gas transmission system, and additional 47 million cubic metres of gas were supplied to local consumers.
The production infrastructure operating at the Samotlor field allowed establishing one of the highest APG utilisation rates in the industry. It includes 23 vacuum compressor stations, 5 additional separation units and 3 line dryer separators. The total length of the gas transmission system amounts to some 530 km.
To further minimise the environmental impact, the modernisation of gas processing facilities will continue in 2021. At present, the technical re-equipment of the additional separation unit and the upgrading of the 1.3 km long low-pressure gas pipeline are underway at Samotlor.
Rosneft is consistently working to increase the level of APG utilisation within the Investment Gas Programme. Its main task is to increase the APG utilisation rate to a level of at least 95%. This goal is achieved thanks to an integrated approach to field development: creating infrastructure, gas shipments to consumers or gas re-injecting into the formation.
Last year, within the Comprehensive Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Programme, Rosneft successfully tested the latest equipment for detecting methane leaks at Samotlor. Testing confirmed the high efficiency of the combined use of modern technical means. The tested equipment, such as laser and thermal imaging scanning devices, ultrasonic detectors, unmanned aircraft equipped with gas analysers, will be used at the Samotlor field on a permanent basis.
The development of the Company’s gas business follows the global trend of using cleaner gas fuel. The implementation of the APG Management Improvement Programme reduces greenhouse gas emissions and improves the environmental situation in the producing regions.
Note for Editors:
Samotlorneftegaz JSC is a major production enterprise of Rosneft Oil Company and the largest industrial facility in the Nizhnevartovsk area. The license areas combined exceed 3,400 square kilometres. The enterprise is developing the Samotlor field, the largest in Russia, the commercial development of which began in 1969.
The enterprise’s cumulative production is 2.8 billion tonnes of oil and 395 billion cubic metres of gas. The APG utilisation rate of 95% was achieved at the Samotlor field in 2009.
