Syzran Refinery Starts Environmental Monitoring with UAVs

21 April 2022

The Syzran Refinery (part of Rosneft's refining complex) has begun using Russian-made unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to monitor pipeline and perimeter conditions in real time. Aerial monitoring will be carried out along three routes with a total scope of 140 square kilometres.

One of the key priorities of the Rosneft-2030 Strategy is developing technological capacity and ensuring accident-free operation of industrial facilities. As one of the leaders in the global energy sector, Rosneft is introducing technologies to protect the environment.

The aerial monitoring complexes are based on aircraft-type drones with improved operational characteristics. It has a maximum take-off weight of 10.5 kg, a 2.8 m wingspan and a flight time of over 4 hours, with a sustained video signal range of over 75 km. The drones are equipped with a remote laser scanner and high-resolution photo, video and thermal imaging equipment.

Data processing is performed using an artificial neural network, a self-learning system that reduces the role of human error in interpreting video and photo materials, increasing the speed of processing.

Note for Editors:

Syzran Refinery, a subsidiary of Rosneft Oil Company, produces more than 30 different petroleum products, which are in high market demand: motor gasolines and diesel fuels of highest emission standard, liquefied petroleum gas, bitumen and so on.

The refinery continues to implement a major modernisation programme to improve the conversion rate and maximise the use of the secondary processes to increase the yield of light products.
