RN-Uvatneftegaz (an enterprise of Rosneft Oil Company’s upstream complex) has presented families of indigenous people in Uvat District of Tyumen Region with machinery for their traditional trades. The Khanty, who live in hard-to-reach settlements, have received five snowmobiles and four self-powered electric generators.
Over the past few years, the enterprise has handed over more than 100 units of various machinery, e.g. chainsaws, motor pumps, boat engines, snowmobiles, to indigenous families. Indigenous people are assisted with machinery, as it wears out each year, as part of a comprehensive programme to support indigenous people.
RN-Uvatneftegaz, jointly with the administration of Uvat Municipal District, the Siberian and Far Eastern Indigenous Minorities Development Fund and other organisations, is implementing a social support programme for Khanty, Mansi and Evenki people of Tyumen Region. It includes extensive assistance in preserving their distinctive culture and way of life.
Every year, the enterprise provides targeted material aid to the families of the indigenous people of Uvat District; pays for the education of young people in specialised secondary and higher educational establishments; finances participation in competitions in the national sport, the oblas (chiselled boat race); provides access to winter roads and ice crossings, which are built annually for production needs; organises fuel dispensing at the fields close to the place of residence.
The Uvas Mir Khot (House of the Northern People), an ethnographic nomad camp, has been established and continues to develop in Tyumen with the help of oil workers. It hosts national holidays, local history and language lessons, interactive excursions, and workshops in arts and crafts and national sports. Visitors can get acquainted with the national “means of transport” - paddlewheel oblases (boats) and reindeer narts. In the near future, there are plans to build a national house with a chuval (hearth), a winter chum (tent), an open-air stage for performances by national bands, and to have a herd of reindeer.
RN-Uvatneftegaz has for a number of years held a unique fair of goods produced by the indigenous people of the Uvat district, where they sell products of traditional trades - hunting, fishing and gathering wild-growing products. The fair also provided an effective platform for discussing pressing issues with the district administration and representatives of the oil enterprise.
