An EcoArctic Forum was held in Taimyr, the region where the major Vostok oil project is being implemented. It was organised by RN-Vankor, ‑the largest oil producer in the Krasnoyarsk territory. The event was supported by the administration of the Taimyr Dolgano-Nenets Municipality and the Russian Geographical Society.
The aim of the event is to create an open and productive dialogue between the major users of the subsoil – Rosneft’s subsidiaries, government representatives, scientists and the public on the issues of preserving the unique and fragile Arctic ecosystems and supporting the traditional way of life of the indigenous peoples of the North living in the Taimyr.
The key event of the forum was a round table attended by representatives of the legislative and executive authorities, Rosneft’s subsidiaries in the Krasnoyarsk territory, and public, scientific and environmental organisations. Employees of RN-Vankor, Vostsibneftegaz and Slavneft-Krasnoyarskneftegaz presented reports on the results of production and environmental activities for 2022. Scientists from the Arctic Research Centre, the Marine Research Centre of Lomonosov Moscow State University and the Siberian Federal University presented the results of a decade of research into biological indicator species of the Arctic zone and the development of a microbial preparation for cleaning offshore areas of hydrocarbon pollution.
Round table participants noted that with the development of Vostok Oil’s major project in Taimyr, the potential for interaction between the region and the oil industry is only increasing. The EcoArctic Forum will contribute to this, and there are plans to make it an annual event in Taymir.
The winners of the first grant competition organised by RN-Vankor to support scientific research in the Taimyrsky Dolgano-Nenetsky Municipality of Krasnoyarsk Territory were announced at the round table.
The Forum’s programme was packed. Ecologists from RN-Vankor, Vostsbineftegaz and Slavneft-Krasnoyarskneftegaz held environmental lectures and a quiz for students of Taimyr College and Rosneft classes in Dudinka.
The EcoArctic Forum ended with a reindeer herder’s day celebration in Nosok.
