Rosneft publishes an atlas «Marine Mammals of Russia»

29 December 2022

Rosneft, together with a non-governmental development institute Innopraktika, published the atlas «Marine Mammals of Russia» as part of the series called «Environmental Atlases of the Russian Seas».

The ecological atlas introduces readers to marine mammals living in the inland waters and seas of Russia. The publication contains scientific data on 47 mammal species that inhabit the said waters. Besides, it has information on climatic and oceanographic features of the seas, the history of research, issues related to marine mammal protection and the main methods of marine mammal research. The book provides up-to-date information on the biology, population structure and natural and anthropogenic threats to the described species. It also contains more than 60 maps, unique illustrations and photos taken during the Company's expeditions.

The atlas represents the results of the Company's many years of work on studying marine mammals, such as polar bear and walrus, which was carried out as part of its corporate biodiversity conservation programme. The aim of the programme is to study and conserve a population of rare animal species whose status can be used to estimate the balance of Arctic ecosystems. The results of the Company's research can be found in a special section of the atlas.

The atlas is the result of the work of specialists from the Company's Arctic Scientific Center and leading scientific institutes of Russia, including Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Lomonosov Moscow State University, V.I. Ilyichov Pacific Oceanological Institute, Murmansk Marine Biological Institute of RAS, Russian Federal Research Institute Of Fisheries and Oceanography, All-Russian Research Institute of Environmental Protection and the Marine Mammal Council.

The publication «Marine Mammals of Russia» will be of interest not only to the professional community, but also to all those who are not indifferent to environmental issues.

The atlas is available for free download:

Note for Editors:

The «Environmental Atlases of the Russian Seas» series is a continuation of the «Russian Arctic Sea Atlases» series by the Rosneft Arctic Research Center. As part of the series, the following publications were published in 2016-2017: «Kara Sea», «Laptev Sea», «Marine Mammals of the Russian Arctic and the Far East».

Rosneft and Innopraktika have already published the atlases «Black and Azov Seas», «Species: Biological Indicators of the State of Arctic Ecosystems» and «Barents Sea» as a part of the «Environmental Atlases of the Russian Seas» series. The series provides up-to-date knowledge in physical geography, oceanology, hydrometeorology, ecology, and marine mammals and birds' dispersal based on the researching results of Rosneft Oil Company in the Arctic. The Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) system has been adapted for the marine bank typification sections.

In 2019, Rosneft together with Innopraktika, a non-governmental development institute, published a unique atlas “Russian Arctic. Space, Time, Resources”.
